Large Carved Scarab
The ancient Egyptians used symbols in their art and religion. One symbol was the scarab beetle, which was a bug found all over ancient Egypt. It was connected to the Egyptian sun god, Ra. This is because the scarab rolls balls of dung across the ground, an act that the Egyptians saw as a symbol of the forces that move the sun across the sky. Young dung beetles, having been laid as eggs within the dung ball, emerge from it fully formed. Therefore, the scarab beetle symbolised the restoration of life. The act of the sun rising from darkness each day.
