Striking images, compelling video clips, and captivating content ensure the children remain fully engaged from the start.
Signing Up to the British Army
Children step into the shoes of a World War One recruit in this interactive session. They experience the process of joining the British Army, including visiting a Recruiting Office and swearing an oath of allegiance to the King. Discipline is introduced as they practice basic drills such as standing to attention, turning, marching, and halting, giving them a taste of a soldier’s early training.
Officer Candidate School
Do the children have what it takes to become leaders? This session challenges them to learn how to command, care for their soldiers, and earn respect. Through a series of battlefield scenarios, their decision-making skills are put to the test as they work together to decide the best course of action. Will they lead their platoon to victory or face disaster?
Stretcher Bearer
This session highlights the crucial role of first aid on the battlefield. After basic first aid training, the children are immersed in a trench warfare scenario. Following an enemy attack, they must assess injuries, apply first aid, and transport their wounded comrades to the Field Hospital. It’s a test of both skill and courage under pressure.
A Soldier’s Life
What was life like for a soldier in the trenches? This session explores the day-to-day challenges and experiences of World War One soldiers. Children examine items from a soldier’s kit bag to learn about the hardships, resourcefulness, and ways soldiers maintained morale during one of the most grueling times in history.
Final Review
The day concludes with a reflective look at the impact of World War One. Children learn sobering statistics about the lives lost and the far-reaching consequences of the war. This powerful ending helps them grasp how the conflict shaped the modern world and leaves a lasting impression of its historical significance.
