Great Fire & Plague
Historic Workshop
Sessions:
This workshop accommodates up to 2 classes for a full day (9 AM – 3 PM).
It is divided into two engaging sessions: The Great Plague of London in the morning and The Great Fire of London in the afternoon.
Morning Introduction: The Plague Doctor, with his distinctive beak-shaped mask, will provide a detailed account of the Great Plague of London, explaining how it began, spread, and impacted the city, along with the aftermath of the outbreak.
Artefact Handling and Investigation: Children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of replica artefacts from the period, learning about their historical uses. They can also dress up in period-appropriate costumes, enhancing their understanding of the time.
The Great Plague Role-Play: In this interactive decision-making game, children will work together to solve challenges with life-or-death consequences, based on actual historical events and primary-source accounts.
Afternoon Introduction: The workshop leader will now assume the role of Thomas Farriner, the baker who is often blamed for starting the Great Fire of London. Children will hear his first-hand account of the fire and decide whether they believe he was truly at fault.
Fight the Fire: Using replica tools, children will engage in a fire-fighting simulation, spraying water at fire targets to experience the challenges of battling a fire in 1666. This exercise encourages teamwork and quick decision-making in a crisis.
The Great Fire Role-Play: Children will plan how to minimize the destruction of the Great Fire, using maps, 3D models of London, and historical information cards. This session, inspired by real events, allows children to make strategic decisions to limit the fire’s spread, based on actual historical sources.
